DESTINATION: Port MacquarieNamed after Governor Lachlan Macquarie, the town was established as a penal settlement in 1821. Present-day Port Macquarie is a fishing port and very popular tourist destination. Because of its pleasant year-round climate and lifestyle it is attracting increasing numbers of families and retirees to settle in the area. Main AttractionsPort Macquarie has an animal park, Billabong Koala and Aussie Park. Open daily 9am-5pm, the park is located off the Oxley Hwy. Cassegrain Winery is open daily for tastings and sales, and offers picnic, BBQ and children's play areas. Families will enjoy the Fantasy Glades theme park where children can see fairytale characters who live in places such as the Old Woman's Shoe and Snow White's Cottage. The park is open daily from 9am to 5pm. The award-winning Hastings Historical Museum on Clarence St, displays convict and pioneer relics in 15 different rooms. St Thomas' Church in Hay St was built by convicts in 1824 and is one of the oldest churches in Australia. |
