DESTINATION: KatherineLying 310km from Darwin, Katherine is a centre for beef-cattle properties, produce farms and the Tindal RAAF Base. Katherine is also the gateway to Nitmiluk NP. Main AttractionsKatherine boasts 2 museums; Katherine Museum off Gorge Rd and the Railway Station Museum (hours of opening from visitors centre). The School of the Air in Giles St is usually open on school days, with tours available. Historic O'Keefe House is in Riverbank Dr. For swimming, fishing or bushwalking in shady riverbank parkland, head for Katherine Low Level Nature Park. Renowned Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk NP, 29km SE, can be viewed by canoe, flat-bottomed tour boat, scenic flight or helicopter. Edith Falls, 62km to the north, is also in Nitmiluk NP and worth a visit. So too is Springvale Homestead, 8km west, the oldest remaining homestead in the Territory, built by Alfred Giles in 1878. Cutta Cutta Caves, 500-million-year-old limestone caves 27km south, are the home of the rare orange horseshoe bat, with cave tours available yearround. Flora River Nature Park, 86km SW, features unique tufa dams, pools and cascades. Aboriginal cultural tours are available at Manyallaluk, Eva Valley.
