Mataranka

Mataranka is a small town 106km SE of Katherine on the Stuart Hwy.


Main Attractions

The Museum of the Never Never has historical displays of railway history and outback life. Statuary representing characters from the Australian classic outback pioneering novel We of the Never Never (by Jeannie Gunn) can be seen in Stan Martin Park. Visitors can see barramundi being fed every morning at Territory Manor and the works of local artists are on show at Stockyard Gallery.

Nearby attractions

Elsey NP, 5km east, offers bushwalking and camping, as well as boating, canoeing and barramundi fishing on the Roper River. A swim in the clear waters of Mataranka Thermal Pool, surrounded by lush forest, is a must. From here, a walking trail leads to the Mataranka Falls and the tufa limestone formations. Mataranka Homestead Tourist Resort has a replica of historic Elsey Station Homestead (where Jeannie Gunn lived). Further north, the Bitter Springs section of Elsey NP has another thermal pool, waterways and BBQ facilities. Elsey Cemetery, 20km south, contains the graves of local pioneers, including Jeannie Gunn.

Lying 310km from Darwin, Katherine is a centre for beef-cattle properties, produce farms and the Tindal RAAF Base. Katherine is also the gateway to Nitmiluk National Park. Renowned Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park, 29km SE, can be viewed by canoe, flat-bottomed tour boat, scenic flight or helicopter. Edith Falls, 62km to the north, is also in Nitmiluk National Park and worth a visit. more
