Mount Buffalo National Park, often referred to as the family mountain.

Mount Buffalo is approximately a four-hour trip from Melbourne and is situated just near the picturesque town of Bright in NE Victoria. It was proclaimed a National Park in 1898 which I believe makes it Australia's oldest national park.

This majestic mountain never fails to impress me every time I visit, with its unique rock formations, towering tors, deep gorges and spectacular panoramic views of the neighboring alps. So if your in the area it is certainly well worth a visit no matter what time of year.

In the spring the mountain showcases a spectacular display of wild flowers and waterfalls, whilst during the summer months it provides a welcome relief to the heat with its cool mountain air and abundance of activities such as; walking, canoeing, swimming, fishing, picnicking, sightseeing, bike and horse riding, as well as rock climbing, caving, abseiling, and hang gliding for the more adventurous plus camping is also available at Lake Catani.

As the seasons change, autumn becomes the ideal time to explore over 90 km of tracks which extend across the park, from short nature walks to longer more challenging walks to remote areas.

Then the winter snow transforms the plateau of Mt Buffalo once more and attracts cross-country skiers with its 14 km of marked trails and extensive back country touring. Downhill skiing is also available with areas set aside for snow play and tobogganing which makes it ideal for beginners or families.

Mount Buffalo NP, established over 100 years ago, is 350km NE of Melbourne and covers 310km. It's a year-round family attraction, with snowsports in winter and wildflowers and walking in summer. It is notable as one of Victoria's top hang-gliding and rockclimbing spots, and offers wonderful views. Visitors can camp or stay in comfort at the historic Chalet or at Tatra Lodge. Facilities include picnic areas, BBQs, toilets and well-marked walking tracks.
